Reflection and Leadership: Your Weekly Check-In

Reader,

So, how did your week go? Did you set aside time to do some thinking about developing yourself as a leader?

As we head into the weekend, I wanted to remind you that "you are in charge." In charge of what? In charge of your decisions, your choices, and how you choose to spend your time. You are not in charge of how other people choose or decide. Why is this important?

Over my career, I have seen many potential leaders give up on themselves. At some point, you begin to realize that despite your best intentions, people will misunderstand you and reject you. But if you examine the life of anyone that we call a "great leader," you will find that they have enemies and followers.

I recently talked to a less experienced leader last week. Some things she said reminded me of how easy it is to get caught up in being liked. Yes, we want to be relatable and likable but at the same time, if we are to make a real difference in the world around us, we will have to sometimes stand our ground in a way that sets us apart from the crowd.

Trying to be "all things to all people" is one of the main ways people fail to have the impact they could have as leaders. Leading with impact will require you to make firm decisions, take bold action, and sometimes go against the status quo. Great leaders are disruptive in the way that they lead because they have a clear definition of who they are, where they are going, and what is important to them.

So, this weekend, spend some time thinking about those three things:

  • Who am I?
  • Where am I going?
  • What's important to me?

If you are working your way through my free workbook, the exercises laid out there are designed to get you to think about these three questions. When you have clarity on those three questions, you will lead with intention and authenticity.
